Fortunately, we’ve transitioned numerous events to a virtual format. While online gatherings can’t replicate the networking benefits of face-to-face meetings, they have unveiled exciting new avenues for engagement.
Recently, we hosted an online Q&A for the Indian editing community featuring the talented Emmy-winning editor Stuart Bass, known for his work on shows like The Office and Arrested Development. This nearly two-hour exchange delved into critical topics such as pacing in episodic storytelling, the swift turnaround time required in series production compared to feature films, and maximizing modern technology. Bass provided attendees with an insight into a typical editing schedule for series and offered valuable tips on managing edits across multiple episodes simultaneously. He also discussed navigating collaborations with other editors, directors, and writers involved in various episodes.
This event is just one of several we've conducted in India. In October 2019, Netflix introduced its inaugural post-production training initiative in Asia, collaborating with the Maharashtra government and Amsterdam Post Lab, with the first session held in Mumbai. This four-day event attracted creative talents from India, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand and focused on essential aspects of series post-production.
Originally, our team planned an in-person Q&A dinner with Stuart for May, but India’s lockdown made that impossible. To ensure the editing community still received valuable knowledge, we swiftly adapted to a virtual format, moderated by two of our dedicated post-production team members in India.
Transitioning to an online platform came with its challenges. Our team conducted several rehearsals to manage the logistics effectively so that participants would have a fulfilling virtual experience. We also navigated internet connectivity issues, having prepared backup plans, although thankfully, everyone managed to connect successfully on the day. The online format even allowed us to invite an extra speaker: Preston Rapp, Bass's assistant editor, who provided insights into collaboration between picture editors, visual effects teams, sound mixers, and other post-production personnel.
Additionally, going virtual broadened participation. The event attracted not just editors and post-production supervisors but also writers, directors, and showrunners, several of whom are involved in Netflix projects.
We eagerly anticipate the return of in-person events, but in the meantime, we will continue to organize more virtual panels, ensuring that the creative community remains intertwined, sharing insights and cultivating collaboration globally.
